Blog 7 Families and the concept of 'family' have changed over the years, some will say for the better and some for the worse. Reflect on the following: Have you seen changes in your family values' over the years? Do older people in your family have different values from yours? what's your concept of family? what's the impact if any, of foreign culture in the way people interact with their family members? what kind of family would you like to have in the future? First of all, I have to begin by saying that I am an optimist but I am a critical one. What I mean to say is that I am not one of those people that thinks that their country is rubbish and that everything is just hopeless. In general terms, I like my country, but I don't have an exacerbated, irrational patriotic sentiment either. Chile is OK but it could be much better. I could talk about drastic changes to education, working conditions, housing; just to name a few, but I really want to focus on concrete things today that could make my life, and that of others, a little more pleasant. The first thing that I would like to see happen is for people to be fined if they let their dogs defecate on the streets without cleaning it up. If you have a dog, it’s not right to let it out for a ‘walk’ so it can defecate all over the place. That’s just plain irresponsible and nasty! If you want your dog to use the streets and parks as a toilet, then pick it up! The second thing that I’d lik...

blog 6- Three things

Imagen
For today's blog I would like you to think about three things that you would like to change about your country. Think about different aspects of everyday life. Do you think that a smaller change might have a greater impact? do you think that the change needs to come from people or is it about people's living conditions? do you think it is better to improve practical aspects of everyday life such as transport? Visualize the things that could either make your life better or that could make life in general better. Work out what needs to be transformed in order for this to happen. Word count: 230 words

blog 5- Future job

It’s not easy to think about where I see myself professionally in the future, but I know that I definitely want to get a PhD sometime in the near future. I would like to do more research on immigrant language identity and therefore, the kind of work I do would be related to that. Ideally, I’d like to work in the Ministry of education because I believe we need to define policies to better integrate our immigrant learners. I also think that Chileans could better benefit from coming into contact with people from different countries and cultures if we find ways to make immigrants more active participants in education aspects as well as diverse social-cultural activities. Another area that interests me is developing assessment material for young learners and adult learners. In public schools, much of the process of assessment has to do with just memorizing information and not really using the new knowledge in a critical way. It’s fundamental to teach young learners critical thinking ...

Blog 4- Politics

Imagen
Politics I personally think that politics runs through the fiber of our daily life and it is behind many of the decisions we take whether we are aware of it or not. Sometimes for instance, we might not buy a certain product or go to a certain shop because the political view of the manufacturers or the owners goes against our beliefs or sometimes our politics. Given how politics permeates different aspects of life, it is essential that people vote if they want to their concerns to be properly voiced and channel. If people just complain but don’t take an active role in shaping their country, then all their complaining is useless. Unfortunately, there’s a very small percentage of people who vote at the moment and lots of the people that whine and complain, they can’t be bothered to leave their houses on Sunday to vote. In every democratic country, we see similar promises being made by candidates: more employment opportunities, strengthening of the economy, more public housing, fr...
